In terms of physical fitness the definition of fitness is “the condition of being physically fit and healthy”. The biological definition of fitness is “an organism’s ability to survive and reproduce in a particular environment”. As with most things, we have a different philosophy when it comes to fitness. No matter who you are and what you do, being physically fit improves every aspect of your life. We fully subscribe to the “Strong Body Strong Mind” concept. Being truly healthy and fit is the foundation on which everything in your life is built, thus our Athletics and Aesthetics Hybrid Training™ (AAHT) concept. When you look good you feel good and that translates into more happiness, confidence and success in your overall life! The average individual is busy dealing with real life issues and rarely has the time and energy to invest into their own personal health. It is all too common that we sacrifice our own health for more pressing issues in life. We know that a body in motion, stays in motion and that the momentum of this can often produce the best results. Variation is the key if you want to achieve the best results as quickly as possible. You should constantly change up various aspects of your fitness program to keep it interesting and effective! You can incorporate Body Building, Cross Training, Dance Fitness, Yoga, Pilates, Mixed Martial Arts as well as various outdoor activities such as Running, Trail Running, Hiking and Biking! In the fitness world there is a great divide between gyms and trainers who typically provide either functional and/or athletic performance style training services or aesthetic and/or cosmetics style fitness services. The functional side arguing that what matters most is performance and the aesthetic side addressing our desire to look better. Survival of the Fittest believes that if your train properly you can accomplish both. In an effort to address both concerns, SOF created a hybrid style training method. Our tried and true techniques address both concerns and as a result our clients look the part and can perform the part as well! We hold the opinion that there is limited value in looking good but not being functionally sound enough to perform athletically. However, we also believe that being functionally sound but looking “less than ideal” is well, “less than ideal”. Let’s be honest, we all want to look our best and there is absolutely no reason why you can’t train in such a way that you accomplish both. Be sure to always use science based information as your guidestone in fitness. Our program is rooted in various forms of weight training. We also include elements of CrossFit, Yoga, Pilates and other types of cross training. We also get outside for various activities like hiking and stair training.
Nutrition is defined as “the act or process of nourishing or being nourished; specifically : the sum of the processes by which an animal or plant takes in and utilizes food substances”. Every aspect of the Survival of the Fittest program including our Nutritional Philosophy is rooted in science. When it comes to Nutrition and “Dieting” we focus on being healthy first and fat loss and weight management second. Fat loss and weight management is a side effect of healthy living and eating. Nutrition is paramount in providing your body with what it needs to function at an optimal level. Most people focus on the weight loss aspect of nutrition. Considering the astoundingly high obesity rates in America this is understandable. However, we teach our clients to not only eat healthy to lose body fat but to provide their body’s with the wide array of nutrients it requires to function properly. If you consume healthy foods that nourish the body in proper portions and include exercise in your daily routine the fat loss/ weight loss automatically follows. There are countless weight loss and dieting books claiming to know the “secret” to losing weight and keeping it off. Here is the “secret”; there is no secret. The basic principles of nutrition are the same today as they were yesterday and the same as they will be tomorrow. Our goal is to effectively teach you the tried and true basics of nutrition so that you can take this knowledge with you for the rest of your life. After all changing the way you eat requires a lifestyle change not just a temporary adherence to a diet. Once you have taken action to improve your nutritional habits you will noticed an immediate series of positive changes. Almost immediately you will notice a significant difference in your overall health and sense of well being. Your happiness level and mood will greatly improve as well. In fact, changing your dietary habits is the first and often times the most effective step in combating various disorders and diseases like diabetes, arthritis, depression and the list goes on. When you give the body the nutrients it needs you will feel more alive, alert and positive. You will have a steady source of natural energy without the “help” of coffee and energy supplements that are often detrimental to your health and leave you more drained than before. The fog in your mind will lift as it becomes clear and you will be better able to focus mentally. Your immune system will become stronger and your body will be more resistant to illness. After all food is nature’s medicine. You will have more restful and satisfying sleep that leaves you energized for your day. You will begin to lean out as you shed unwanted water weight and lose body fat. Your physical appearance will improve and others will begin to notice that you have a healthy glow about you. An interesting side effect of eating healthy is that your performance in the activities of your everyday life will drastically improve. In short, you will be better able to do whatever it is that you do and achieve greater success in all areas of your life. The benefits of living a healthy lifestyle that includes maintaining proper nutrition are virtually endless. You should consider maintaining proper nutrition as a solid investment in your health and in your future. You owe it to yourself and to your loved ones to lead a healthy life. The old adage; “you are what you eat” is essentially true. First you must decide that you want to be healthy and then make it your intention to do so. You must take full responsibility for your own personal health and wellbeing. This is not a temporary fix. This will require a lifestyle change on your part. The goal is to strike a balance in your life that will enable you to be happy and healthy. Admittedly changing your nutritional habits requires a certain level of perceived sacrifice. You may find it challenging at first. You may fail a few or many times but do not give up on your health. Staying the course and making these sacrifices brings real change that greatly enhances the quality of your life.

Next, you set your intentions and clearly define your goals. In order for this to work you must believe in yourself and believe in the process. Then, you map it all out and create a battle plan. The last thing left to do is roll up your sleeves and put in the hard work. You must wake up every day and actively work towards accomplishing your goals. With the desired outcome in mind you take it step by step, day by day and before you know it you’ve accomplished your goal(s). We are here to guide and encourage you every step of the way!
